Preparing for Lent {Including Our Ash Wednesday/Lent-Themed Lesson Plans + Anawim Immersion}

February 10, 2013 by Tina

Lent is just days away, and I’m hoping to get a headstart on how we’re going to observe this solemn, wonderful, meaningful season which leads to the GREATEST celebration in the Church: Easter! 🙂

Here’s what we’re planning for Lent — I’m sharing it with you, dear friends, in case you’re looking for ideas. (There are hundreds, no, thousands, of ideas on the Internet actually! :))

(FYI: Most of our plans are inspired by other Catholic mom bloggers, particularly homeschool moms, like Lacy of , Jessica of Shower of Roses, Melissa of Homegrown Catholics, and of course, my friends Erika of Raising and Teaching Little Saints, and Monica of Equipping Catholic Families, who are co-hosting the “Keeping Love in Lent Link-Up” with me (click here if you want to join that!). 🙂

Taking off from Lacy’s  plus bits and pieces of inspiration from the other fabulous moms mentioned above, this year, our Lenten activities will pretty much be the same as the previous two years’, and will include:

  • Learning more about Ash Wednesday and Lent through our homeschool “lessons” — For our specific lesson plans for this week, you can go here. (You can download them if you like, no problem with me!) We’re joining the families of Catholic Filipino Academy in their trip to Anawim, a home for the abandoned elderly (founded by Bo Sanchez) this Friday, so I thought it would be good to use Storm in the Night and other books that have elderly people in the stories (mostly grandfathers and grandmothers) this week for our read-alouds.
books

Along with Storm in the Night and the other “elderly”/grandparents-themed books, we’ll be using Science-themed books (Hear this!, The Sun) plus faith-based/Bible-based books about helping others.

  • Continuing the practice of “giving up” something for the entire season of Lent — as a family and as individuals — and doing more of something good, like being more patient, charitable and kind to others. Specifically, we will have less “gadget” time for the kids and more free play/read-aloud time.

Since Tim’s already six, I have also asked him to choose something he’d like to give up for Jesus. (He still hasn’t decided yet though!) Also, less of the things they like and consider as “treats,” like sweets (I hope and pray God will “whisper” our intentions to those people who always spoil them with sweets, especially the grandparents! Ha, ha!).

Personally, I plan to focus on being more patient and loving, and do less nagging (that’s giving up something, right?) and criticizing. (I was thinking of less screen time and social media time, but it’s part of my job, so that would be a bit difficult!).

  • Continuing the use of the Lenten countdown calendar (I’ve already printed out .)
  • Continuing the use of our Jesus Tree — I printed out Melissa’s ornaments last year and we use the branch that came with our . You can get the ornaments by clicking here if you like. (Melissa has some other great Lenten ideas in that post, too!)
  • Continuing the tradition of setting money aside for our offering box (also inspired by Lacy — click for her post on that)
  • Finishing the de-cluttering and organization of our things (still not completely done from Christmas! Yikes!) — The kids have finally agreed to give the toys that they don’t play with anymore away! (Yes, we had issues with this before!)
  • Going to Confession (for Anthony and me). I’ll also start teaching Tim about the Sacrament of Reconciliation in a “deeper” way. 🙂 (He’s always so curious whenever his Papa and I line up for Confession, and asks, “Why can’t I go in with you?”) I got a book from Book Sale that I hope will be able to help me explain things:

vc5ek

  • Doing the Stations of the Cross — Admittedly, we didn’t do this much during previous years, which is why we plan to do it more regularly this year. I plan to use some ideas from Jessica (Shower of Roses).
  • Attending Masses aside from weekly Sunday Mass and praying the Rosary more frequently (Especially the sorrowful mysteries during Lent)
  • Reading more books connected to Easter and Lent (though we hardly have any of the latter — still need to scour more local bookshops for those! Hopefully, will also have some related titles soon. *Keeping my fingers crossed*)

These are just some of the things we plan and hope to do — though just typing them out already makes them seem like so much. More than anything else, of course, we want the kids to remember what Lent is really about:

This video from Our Sunday Visitor sums it up perfectly:

Here’s to a meaningful Lenten season for us all! 🙂

New Home, New Look, New Amazing Grace Giveaway! :) (Thanks again, Moringana!)

February 8, 2013 by Tina

Howdy, friends! 🙂

If you’ve been following my updates on (FYI, you need to add my page to your Interest Lists or click on “Show in News Feed” when you hover your mouse over the “Like” button to make sure you see my posts), you’d know that I FINALLY sucked in my fear, “took the plunge,” and moved to a different blogging platform over the past few days.

Yes, I’m officially a WordPress blogger now — thanks to my cousin, who is with WebPhils.com, who offered me a blog migration and hosting package which I could not resist! 🙂 Of course, I couldn’t have had the courage to finally make the switch if it hadn’t been for the support of my fellow work-at-home moms (WAHMs), mom bloggers and dear friends: Martine, Jayme, Jenn, Marge, Patty, Ditas, Ginger and Janice. 🙂 (Thanks SO much, ladies! You gals rock!)

I believe that things don’t just “happen,” and that God allows even something “trivial” like moving my blog to a new platform to happen for a higher purpose — so, YES, I am excited for what’s to come! 🙂

I just pray that I don’t lose too much sleep trying to fix what still needs to be fixed here on the blog — I still need to add different widgets, including the buttons for the different online communities that I’m part of: World Moms Blog, Catholic Bloggers Network, MomCenter Philippines, and so on. I need to fix my sidebar, too, so that I can adjust the size of my blog partners’s ads. 🙂

Another reason for losing sleep: The theme I’m using now (do you guys like it, by the way? 😉 is only temporary, but I’m already obsessed with tweaking it! Ha, ha! 🙂 I need to get in touch with the awesome designer of my blog’s final theme/design so we can talk more about the look I want (clean, simple).

So, yes, there are a LOT of things I need to straighten out. 🙂 Pray for me, OK? I want this little online space to be a place for YOU guys, too — somewhere God can touch you, somewhere where you’ll be inspired and empowered, somewhere you’ll find useful bits of information that can help you live a fantastic life, especially if you’re a mom! 🙂

Now… to “celebrate” my moving to this new home, and my blog’s new (though temporary) look, how about another Amazing Grace giveaway by ? 🙂

Keeping LOVE in LENT Link-Up 2013

February 6, 2013 by Tina

Are you feeling pressured to have your holiest, sacrifice and prayer-filled Lenten Journey this year?

Do you ever find that you start out on Ash Wednesday with ashes on your forehead and so many sacrifice and prayer resolutions, but get discouraged by the second week because you can’t stick to them all?

How about focusing on one solid resolution or Lenten program or one different challenge each week: one that our families might be able to stick with, will draw all of us closer to Jesus, and one that we can carry out with love in our hearts instead of grumpy Lent faces?

Do you want to share what your family is doing for Lent this year?

Then join us, Tina of Truly Rich Mom, Erika of Raising (& Teaching) Little Saints, and Monica at Arma Dei: Equipping Catholic Families in the Keeping LOVE in LENT Blog Link-Up 2013.

We’re also going to incorporate a totally optional Follow Frenzy feature for those who want to be inspired by other people’s posts, with the added benefit of getting meaningful comments and new followers to your own blog.

A blog link-up is where we each write a blog post on the same theme. Everyone will get links to other bloggers’ posts to multiply your reach, and to help spread the message of Keeping LOVE in LENT!
You will have the option to participate in the Follow Frenzy, committing to visit and leave meaningful comments on 20 different blog posts that are part of the Keeping LOVE in LENT Blog Link-Up (and receiving 20 meaningful comments on your own blogpost!)

Please note: You don’t have to participate in the Follow Frenzy, especially if reduced blog time is part of your Lent!

The link-up is open to all bloggers, particularly Catholics and Christians of all denominations who observe LENT. You may write about anything that pertains to the blog theme, e.g. share tips on how you and your family keep LOVE in LENT; stories to encourage others to do so; books and activities (even recipes!) that help keep the Lenten observances of fasting, abstinence from meat on Fridays, extra prayer, sacrifices, cleaning and giving clothes away to the poor; special Catholic devotions and practices like extra weekday Masses or Stations of the Cross, etc.

To participate, please follow these steps:
1. Register by filling out the form (click  to access it) no later than Pancake Tuesday, February 12, 2012.
2. Write your blog post on the theme, “Keeping LOVE in LENT” in the first part of LENT and publish the blog post on February 19-20, 2013, filling out the link-up form we will send you with the direct URL link to your blog post, no later than February 20, 2013 at 9AM (EST).

You will receive the complete list of blog post links by noon on February 20, 2013 (EST) for you to add at the bottom of your post.
At the beginning of your blog carnival post,
please include the following introduction,
along with the Keep Love in LENT button!

“I’m participating in the Keeping LOVE in LENT Blog Link-Up 2013, hosted by
Raising (& Teaching) Little Saints, Truly Rich Mom and Arma Dei: Equipping Catholic Families. We’ll be sharing different ways, tips, stories and real-life experiences that will help us focus on Lenten sacrifices, prayer and good deeds, and how to carry them out with LOVE instead of a GRUMBLE. Please scroll down to the end of the post to see the list of link-up entries.”
The deadline for registration for the carnival is February 12, 2013 (Pancake Tuesday).

Posting instructions and link-up rules will be e-mailed to all participants on February 14, 2013 and the link-up will go live on February 20, 2013.

PLEASE PUBLISH YOUR BLOG POSTS no later than 9am EST on February 20, 2013.
PLEASE NOTE:

We do not moderate or screen posts but we do reserve the right to exclude your entry from the list of link-up participants should your post be offensive, irrelevant to the link-up theme, contain personal attacks, off-topic articles, articles that are anti-Christ or are articles aimed to market products or services.

Truly Rich Reflections: Water Into Wine

February 4, 2013 by Tina

My family and I came home on Sunday night from Baguio, where we attended an inspiring (though at times, tiring) weekend retreat organized by , our Catholic community. Since then, my mind and heart have been overflowing!

I tried to “capture” some of our Baguio moments through this photo collage, but I don’t think it does justice!
Which means I really MUST write a post, yes? 🙂

There is SO much I want to blog about — so many lessons learned especially during the first month of the year! So many blessings to share, so many wonderful homeschool experiences and “a-ha!” moments! So many people I want to give a “shout out” to, so many answered prayers!

So.many.things.to.write.about.

The problem is I don’t know where to start. I don’t know how to begin.

So… while I try to organize my thoughts into a post (or series of posts, maybe?)… And before I write an article for one of my “sideline” writing projects… I just want to share with you one of, if not THE biggest, blessings we’ve received since 2013 started, via a screenshot of my post on Facebook:

For those of you who may not be aware of our initial fears, doubts, worries concerns about the little one in my womb, you might want to read this post on the truth about my pregnancy.

After making that “confession,” I felt as if a huge burden had been lifted off my shoulders. Because I knew that we were no longer “alone” in our journey. I knew that people from all over the world were lifting us up, especially our baby, in their prayers. And for that, I am/we are forever grateful.

You have shown us how powerful the gift of prayer can be. You have helped us see how Jesus turns water into wine, and creates miracles, every single day.

So, dear friends, please forgive the lack of any other updates / detailed posts for now. I just want to leave you with this song by Chris Tomlin, which I have personally dubbed as our “theme song” for our baby (Tim’s is “On Eagle’s Wings,” while Rysse’s is “Still.” Why? 🙂 Oooh… more topics for future blog posts!):

Whatever you may be facing right now, believe that Jesus, our Miracle-maker, is near. Through the powerful intercession of His Blessed Mother, who is our own mother, too, He will fill your “empty jars.” He will turn your “water” into “wine.” He will make all things work together, for the good of those who love Him. (Romans 8:28)

My mom, my dad, me, Tim, Rysse and Anthony
We were surprised to be asked to be “models” during one of the sessions at the retreat, and my dad was asked to proclaim how we would witness to Christ’s love and mission as a family. I had tears in my eyes listening to him speak. (I think my mom did, too!) We are not a perfect family, and have our own struggles and sins and failures, but we are truly blessed to have God and one another.
