A Tribute To My Father – A Man After God’s Own Heart

November 19, 2011 by Tina Leave a Comment

Papa and Mama leading the Lord’s Day Celebration while on mission in Timor
Yesterday, it was my dearest Papa’s birthday. I have blogged about him before on one of my weekly posts for Philstar.com’s unBLOGGED, in commemoration of Father’s Day. In my entry I honored him and thanked him for everything that he has taught me about being a parent.

Today though, I want to honor Papa for seeking and striving to be “a man after God’s own heart.” What does this mean?
Papa (and Mama) on mission in Nepal (March 2010)
Quoting from this article here:
“…for the plainly stated explanation from Scripture for the reason David was a man after God’s own heart:

(Acts 13:22 NIV) After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’

He will do everything I want him to do. Wow, how simple is that and yet how hard is that for us to emulate? David was willing to do whatever God asked him to do. As we have seen David had his faults, but God knew his heart. He knew that David loved Him and would do whatever He asked him to do.”

My Papa had, and still has (he admits this himself!) a lot of faults. When my siblings and I were growing up in Brunei, we used to be terrified of him whenever he’d lose his temper. I won’t go into detail because all of that is irrelevant now, and God’s grace and mercy has caused great healing in our family. But yeah, Papa has his imperfections, weaknesses, faults and failures – just like David  (read the detailed article so you’ll understand better). Just like all of us. No one’s perfect right?
My Papa, Mama, Lola Basilisa (Papa’s mother, who is now in heaven!), my sister, Tito Tony (at the back), little bro J, and me (at my Kuya’s graduation I think)
Still, God chose him, just like He chose David. Because He knew that Papa loved Him and would do whatever He asked him to do. Just like David.

Take the following as examples:

Putting God first
I had just given birth to our first child while on mission in Timor. We had to be confined longer than we thought because Tim had jaundice, and I had to have my episiotomy repaired (ok, sorry for sharing too much!)

It was in the midst of busy, busy times for CFC in Timor Leste, and Papa had meetings scheduled with the CFC leaders. Despite his busyness though, he did visit us a couple of times in the hospital. But he always put serving God first. And I completely understood / understand him – in fact, I admire him for it! He did what he believed God wanted him to do at that particular time.

Growing in love with the Lord, together with one’s spouse
Ever since he became a fulltime missionary for Couples for Christ (and Mama serving as his mission partner), Papa and Mama have been spending a lot of their birthdays and wedding anniversaries on mission.
Their anniversary this year was spent in Kuala Lumpur, a stopover on their way home from mission in Bangladesh.
Papa shared about the mission in South Asia. 😉

While other people would be preoccupied with how they could spend time “rewarding” or treating themselves (which is not a bad thing in itself mind you!), Papa always puts God first. Even if there were special celebrations and such.

During a “welcome back ceremony” in Timor Leste 😉
This was proven in more recent events.

The day before his birthday, Papa was at the CFC Home Office, settled in to finish everything on his to-do list before he and Mama leave for the CFC Holy Land Pilgrimage. I know he must have had a lot to do, but just before lunch, he was asked to replace a speaker for the Christian Life Program (on the topic “What It Means To Be A Christian) being held at the Court of Appeals.

Papa could have said, “No, I have lots to do” but he didn’t. Just like David. Because he loves God and wanted to please Him.
On the eve of Papa’s birthday, he attended the Thanksgiving Dinner of , of which he is a board member. Yep, my Papa is 100% pro-life!
On the day of his birthday, Papa had a meeting with the CFC Evangelization and Missions Office team, of which he is a part. He didn’t “blow it off” as others might have done. He spent his morning and afternoon doing “God’s work.”

In the evening, he gave the talks on the Holy Spirit at the Christian Life Program in our village. We were supposed to have a family dinner but we re-scheduled it because Papa had already committed to giving the talk.

Again, he could have made his birthday an excuse for not speaking – but he didn’t. Why? Because our Papa, the man who let God turn his world upside down when he joined CFC many years ago, is a man after God’s own heart.

Thank You Lord for my Father. For the example He gives on how to be Your servant – striving to be holy through regular prayer, Scripture reading and service; faithful in all things; and zealous for your mission.

We should live as holy a life as we can and we can live a very holy life with the Holy Spirit’s help. We should read and mediate on God’s word. We should be people of prayer, praying without ceasing. Yet if we really want to be men and women after God’s own heart, we need to start doing what He asks us to do. It is not always easy, it is not always fun and it is often without human reward or recognition, but who do we serve, man or God? Who do we want to please, man or God? Who do we want to think highly of us, man or God? (From Behind the Badge.net)

Of my sister on All Souls’ Day

November 1, 2011 by Tina Leave a Comment

Note: Very personal and long sharing ahead. 😉 Go ahead and read it though – I hope it inspires you to honor the important people in your life as well! 😉 BE BLESSED!

My dearest Ate (older sister) celebrates her birthday today, which incidentally is All Souls’ Day too. On this day, when the entire Catholic church honors and remembers the dead, and offers prayers for them, I choose to also honor and remember my sister, who is very much alive, and blessed recently with the gift of life in her womb, after almost 11 years of faithful waiting, hoping and praying. (Watch out for her story in the January 2012 issue of Kerygma magazine!)

Ate and Kuya Rhenee (Bhot to his loved ones, hehe)
Thank you Mama Mary and St. Pio for the gift of life you’ve given them!

My Ate (and Kuya or older brother) was not with us for quite a number of years. You see, we were an OFW (overseas Filipino worker) family, since my parents worked in Brunei for over 20 years. Though we were blessed to be in Brunei together, my sister left Brunei to study high school (2nd year onwards) and college in the Philippines. My Kuya followed a few years afterwards. Only my youngest brother and I were left in Brunei with my parents.

Guess who I am in the picture! haha!

My childhood in Brunei was full of fond memories, especially with my family. Despite living abroad, our parents hardly ever spoiled us, and taught us the value of hard work, prayer and family bonding.

(now I realize we sorta lived on a farm back then! hehe) circa 1987
When my Ate went home to the Philippines to study, she was taken care of by our dearest maternal grandmother, Ina, who is now in heaven with all the other souls and saints. My aunts and uncles also helped look after Ate.
Our dearest Ina, a great mother and grandmother

As a child, I remember how happy we would be whenever my sister and brother would come to Brunei for vacation. Christmas was always made more meaningful and special by their presence.

Christmas 1991 – My dad would always have us pose for family portraits every year. A simple but wonderful tradition. (We should do this too! LOL!)
Now it is the reverse – my sister and her husband (and my new nephew/niece in her tummy!) are based in Brunei, and we are based here in Manila with my parents. Whenever they are home, we really make sure we take time together to bond.
During our last bonding activity with my sister before my cousin BJ’s wedding in July

We are 6 years apart, my Ate and I, but now those years seem like only months. We share about anything and everything whenever we chat online or are together in person. We talk about our married life, our husbands (hehe!), our hopes, dreams, fears, worries, frustrations, prayer intentions, etc. Whenever I see her online, I always try to say “Hi!” and “Yayu!” (which is our family’s term for “I Love You.”)
Chatting with Ate during Mama’s 60th birthday celebration
Now that she is a mom (yes, being pregnant already makes you a mom you know! 😉 I am even more excited to share about being a mother with her. It is kind of weird to be the one giving advice and tips to her this time, but I am blessed and happy to do so, whether it’s about breastfeeding, babywearing or homeschooling, or other parenting-related things. (Admittedly though, I’m not an expert on this!)
Today, on her birthday, I only pray for more blessings and miracles in her life and her family. I pray for good health for her and her baby and her hubby. I pray for God to answer their other long-time prayers, especially for financial security. I also want to honor her for being the BEST daughter to our parents (yes, better than me! LOL!); sister to us siblings; friend to all she knows; and most of all, servant of Christ through the service she does in the Church and in .
My sister (with hand raised, eyes closed) – A true woman of faith 😉
Ate, thank you. Thank you for all the times you are there for us. For all the times you did baby research for me, and e-mailed the researched documents to me when we were still in Timor. For always opening your heart and home to us, especially when we would be blessed to visit Brunei. For your generosity in all matters, including material and financial. For coming to Timor when Rysse was born. For being the best Ninang to Tim and honorary Ninang to Rysse. For always encouraging me when I am down. For being living, breathing proof that if God wants to create life in the womb, He will do it, no matter what! For all these, and so.much.more.
We love you. A blessed happy birthday to you!
P.S. I didn’t mean for this to go on and on – got carried away! Hehe! 😉

Truly Rich Recommendations: Catholics and Halloween – Good reads esp. for Catholic parents!

October 31, 2011 by Tina Leave a Comment

A quote from this article on Halloween’s Catholic Origins probably sums up what I have been thinking and “talking” about lately on social networks and with people I know, (and just yesterday on Radyo Veritas, when I was interviewed because of this article on CBCP News about our homeschool group’s All Saints’ Day celebration on November 4):

“Let’s not focus on werewolves, witches, goblins or other evil characters but maybe other virtuous people or heroes,” he said. “If not saints, then have them dress up as a fireman or football player or G.I. Joe. There are a lot of good figures in our secular culture worth emulating.”

In fact, I highly recommend all Catholic parents to read the complete article here, along with the other thought-provoking, inspiring articles about Catholics and Halloween below:
Should Catholics celebrate Halloween?
Christians and Halloween: Should Christians celebrate Halloween?

At the end of the day, Jesus reminds us that we are “in the world, not of the world,” (John 17: 6-17), and that He has “sent” us into this world – so let’s be the change we want to see in the world, and let God’s love and light shine in our lives, for His greater glory! 😉

Happy All Hallows’ Eve everyone!

Truly Rich Tips: Ideas for Celebrating All Souls’ Day

October 27, 2011 by Tina Leave a Comment

Photo from theholidayspot.com

All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day are an integral part of many a Filipino family’s annual calendars, particularly for the Catholics and Christians who make up approximately 85% of the population.

While All Saints’ Day is a special day to commemorate the saints in heaven, All Souls’ Day or Araw ng mga Patay is an occasion that is more “close to home.” On this day, Filipinos remember their dead loved ones through prayer and by offering flowers. It is also often an occasion for relatives to get together, thus it is a tradition that must be passed on to our children not only to teach the value of prayer but also to foster close family relations.

Here are some ideas to make your family’s commemoration of All Souls’ Day more meaningful:

1. Offer up prayers and masses.
This is probably something most of us are already doing. For Catholics, it is believed that the offering of masses and prayers are especially beneficial for the souls in purgatory i.e. they are offered to ease whatever suffering and pain they are in. When going to mass as a family, especially on All Souls’ Day, try to make it extra meaningful by preparing your kids beforehand i.e. explaining the rites to them; showing them who it is you’re offering Mass for; etc.

2. Offer flowers and light candles at the cemetery.
This is another common practice among Filipino families. This year though, try to get the kids more involved by having them help prepare flower wreaths or garlands, and choosing the candles that you will be lighting.

3. Revisit photos and videos of your deceased loved ones.
Instead of focusing on the sadness of their passing though, rejoice in the fact that they have returned “home” to heaven (or if you believe in purgatory, at least they’re halfway there!). Keeping them alive in your family’s memory is one of the best tributes you could offer them. This would be a wonderful time to speak of them to your kids with fondness and love.

(For more ideas, please continue reading this article on Smart Parenting’s website here. I also wrote about celebrating Halloween *aka All Hallow’s Eve* and All Saints’ Day on my homeschool blog – click here and here to read my posts.)
