Homeschooling Help: Printable Flashcards for Teaching Your Kindergartener Sight Words!

As you may (or may not, harhar) know, our second child is already of Kindergarten age (she just turned 5 last month). While I’m not one to push for “formal” learning at this age, I do want to expose her every now and then to what other kids her age are (probably) learning in school. Right now, my focus is on teaching her phonics (or letting her learn them through the Leapfrog DVDs we got at an event, ha, ha!) and a few sight words.

I usually let the kids watch 1 to 2 DVDs a day — either LeapFrog videos, saint videos or Christian cartoon videos.

In my search for “tools” to help me teach my five-year-old sight words, I came across a few cool websites. At first I thought of creating my own flashcards, so I googled “create your own flashcards.” Among the top search results was Cram.com, but apparently it’s more appropriate for older students (think high school to college). I still bookmarked it though, because I discovered that it has Filipino flashcards (and we all know that we need all the Filipino resources that we can get, right?!). [Read more…]

It’s been a busy, busy week and it seems that the days ahead will be even busier — which explains the lack of posts here! I’ve ‘been’ elsewhere on the Web though (more on that later). I just wanted to share about this great back to back Parent Seminar organized by Mathemagis and The Learning Library:

mmThey had the first run of the seminar last week, and this week’s run (tomorrow!) will be at the Mathemagis Katipunan branch. I’ve written about Mathemagis on Philstar.com before and the kids and I really enjoyed our time at their Katipunan branch.

I also learned a lot from The Learning Library and The Learning Basket’s seminar on how to make reading and effective and lasting habit 2 years ago. We also visited The Learning Library’s branch in Katipunan.

llThat’s why I’m sure those of you who will be attending the FREE parent seminar tomorrow will learn a lot too — the people from Mathemagis and The Learning Library really know their stuff! 🙂 Here are the details again:

Freebie Fridays: Free Catholic Homeschool Curriculum!

7 {Homeschooling} Post-5s

 

This is going to be one of those short but sweet posts. Over the course of our homeschool journey, I’ve discovered many different homeschool resources and sites, some of which provide free homeschool curricula. Of these, only the ones listed here are purely Catholic, or at least that’s what it says in their descriptions.

BUT… before we go there, you might want to read this useful article on CatholicSistas: 10 Steps to Selecting a {Catholic} Homeschool Curriculum.

OK, now on to the list!

Mater Amabilis is a Charlotte Mason style curriculum for Catholics. It covers the preschool to eight grade levels. Here’s the description from the website:

Mater Amabilis (MAH-tare Ah-MAH-bee-lease) translated from Latin means Mother Most Lovable and is a title of Our Lady in the Litany of Loreto (Mother Most Amiable). Mary, under the title of Mater Amabilis, is our patron and our model. The inspiration for the name comes from the Catholic parish of the same name in Ambleside, England where Charlotte Mason lived and worked.

The Mater Amabilis curriculum is placed under the patronage of The Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Mater Amabilis and Blessed John Cardinal Newman. We are 100% faithful to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, the Holy Father Pope Francis and the Bishops in communion with him.

St. Thomas School Free Catholic Curriculum is a K-12 curriculum that was put together by a Catholic homeschool mom, Maria Rioux. It is “bare boned” but can be used as a guide for homeschooling families. I originally heard of it here, and you can look at it directly here.

Catholic ABC’s Preschool Curriculum is the FREE abridged version of Lacy Rabideau’s (of Catholic Icing) curriculum of the same name, i.e. Catholic ABC’s (The Book). I have a copy of Lacy’s book and it is really good. The abridged version is useful too. If you have preschool-aged kids, go ahead and .

Free Curricula from Catholic Heritage Curricula (CHC) — This is a collection of free homeschool resources for Catholic families, found on the CHC website. You can take a look at it here.

I have been a faithful reader of Simple Homeschool for a few years now. I always find the posts there encouraging and oh-so-timely. A few of my favorites are Stepping Outside the Grade-Level Box, Help! My 5-year-old won’t “do” school, The truth about preschool, and of course the “A Homeschool Day in the Life” series. It always seems to me that whenever I encounter challenges and struggle with doubts about our children’s current educational path, the post for that day or week on Simple Homeschool would be perfect for my situation. I’d like to believe that’s how God intends it to be. 😉

Anyway, as I mentioned before, I was privileged to have met Jamie, the editor of Simple Homeschool, in person last year, and even more blessed to have a guest post published on the site. Ironically, it is only now that I was able to download Jamie’s FREE ebook. Titled Secrets of a Successful Homeschool Mom I’m committing to finish reading it by next month. 🙂 I know I’ll learn a lot from it, and I’m sure you will too, especially if you’re new to or just exploring homeschooling!
