Amazing Grace for Moms: Thriving by the Grace of God

July 7, 2012 by Tina

I have a confession to make — this post has been loooong overdue! I know I said I’d continue the Amazing Grace for Moms series throughout June, but before I knew it, June had snuck up on me and flashed by at the speed of lightning, and now it’s already July! 🙁 My sincerest apologies to you all, and especially to those who submitted posts for this series. 🙂

Anyway, I’ll try harder to be regular with this starting this month, OK? (The operative word being “try.” LOL!)

To start off, here’s a guest post from Mommy TG, i.e. Teresa Gumap-as Dumadag, who, like me, is a Catholic homeschool mama, writer and blogger — among other things, too! (Check out her complete profile here.) May you be inspired by her story and be amazed by His grace! 😉

Thriving by the Grace of God

Thrive is defined by Merriam-Webster.com as:
1.    to grow vigorously: flourish

2.    to gain in wealth or possessions: prosper

3.    to progress toward or realize a goal despite or because of circumstances.

In The Free Dictionary, it is defined as to make steady progress; prosper.

I feel so blessed already just by reading these definitions of the word thrive.  The word kept coming into my mind as I was thinking of what to share when Tina invited me to write a guest post for her blog’s 50 Days of Amazing Grace.

Let me share how the different definitions of thrive has been applicable to me.

I won’t be able to share the details of my story in this post but I will do my best to give you a glimpse of my adventure with God as manifested in my professional life and the choices that I made over the years.
I graduated from the University of the Philippines in Diliman with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration.  I was already offered a job even before I officially graduated.  I started as a Management Trainee in a fast food restaurant, got promoted and given bigger responsibilities, and became Officer-in-Charge of a branch in just two years.  Then, I resigned from my job and turned my back on a promising career in the restaurant business.

Many people did not understand why I made that decision.  Many people are either unemployed or underemployed, or are dreaming of being able to apply what they studied in their jobs.  There I was living the dream of many and yet I chose to let go of something very good.

Why did I resign?  I resigned because I had an “aha” experience.  I realized what my true passion was.  I realized that though I liked the restaurant business and I was good at it, there was something else that made my heart race faster and my mind ever so active.  It was helping people develop to their full potential by inspiring them and training them.  I discovered this as I was handling the training and development of our staff in the restaurants where I was assigned.  I experienced a different kind of fulfillment and joy.

So armed with that discovery and faith in God whom I believe was the one who planted that desire in my heart to make a career shift, I left my stable and promising job and looked for a job in training.

Another compelling reason for me to leave my job then was that it hindered me from attending regular prayer meetings in a Catholic Charismatic Community of single professionals.  Moreover, my shifting work schedule in my job made it very challenging for me to enjoy the presence of God daily in the Eucharist.  There were times when I would doze off during Mass while kneeling and praying with my eyes closed.

Shortly after I resigned, I was hired by a training company mainly for my potential.  I had little experience but the owner of the company believed in me so much that he hired me as Training Officer.  I felt God’s assurance through him.  I learned many things in that company including how to use Power Point and how to make training manuals.

That was just the start of a wonderful adventure with God in my career or professional life.  The things that happened next to me in the years that followed were all miracles from God and a result of His grace.

It all started with a dream to have a job in the training department of the fast food restaurant where I first worked.  But God was not content in simply fulfilling that small dream that I had for myself.  He pushed me out of the first company I joined so I could grow and be fit for the much bigger dreams that He had for me.

I was eventually hired as Training Officer of bigger companies, including a multinational company where I grew exponentially in many aspects.  It was during my employment in this company that my dream of being able to travel to different places was fulfilled.  I conducted trainings locally and abroad.  I developed training modules which were used in our branches in the Philippines and in the Asian region.

From Training Officer, I was promoted to Training Manager.  I was very happy already with what I had achieved by the grace of God.  But God had bigger plans for me.

I was hired by another company to be their HR Manager again, mainly because of my potential and my value system.  After that, I was hired in another big company where my dreams of having my own vehicle and being paid a specific amount as compensation were realized.

I couldn’t help but feel so blessed as I look back at my growth as a professional.  There are still a lot of times when I just stand in awe of God as I thank Him for making all these things possible in my life.  I know deep in my heart that I would not have all these achievements if not for His grace and His help; especially since my educational background was not related to human resources management, but hotel and restaurant administration.

What amazes me even more now is that I have already realized my dream of becoming a freelance Management and HR Consultant.  The timing is also perfect for me to finally live out my dream.  I stopped working full time shortly after I got married and at the beginning of my first pregnancy.   From someone who simply dreamed of having a job in training, now I get to choose the HR projects I work on.

I praise and thank God for helping me to keep on moving forward and achieving my goals.  I praise and thank Him for prospering me and my family through the work of my hands over the years.  I praise and thank Him for the grace to believe in Him, in His Word and in my god-given gifts.  I praise and thank Him for the grace to step out with courage and hope every time He pushed me out of my comfort zone and asked me to stretch beyond my perceived limits.  I praise and thank Him for all the doors of opportunities He has opened for me through the years until now that I’m not only a freelance Consultant but also an author and freelance writer.

I did not achieve my dream or my goals without challenges or difficulties.  The truth is I had plenty of them.  I think those were the reasons that made every achievement and victory much sweeter.  I can’t help but point to God every time I’m asked to tell my story because I would not be where I am now if not for His amazing grace.

So let me end my sharing by encouraging you, dear reader, not to be afraid to listen to God’s voice in your heart.  Do not be afraid to follow His lead.  His grace will be enough for you as He calls you to do new and bigger things.  I can say this with conviction and know this to be true because I have experienced this truth in my life repeatedly.  I pray that you, too, would find yourself to be in one amazing adventure with God.  God bless!

Are You B.U.S.Y.? {Or, the One in Which I Restart (and Rename) the Days of Amazing Grace series}

June 18, 2012 by Tina

I noticed that a lot of my posts here lately have always had me mentioning how busy I’ve been… And I’m not liking it. There always seems to be an endless list of things to do and, to be perfectly honest, I am tired.

Source.

I’m tired of being busy.

And I’m tired of not being as focused on my family, especially my kids, because I’m busy. (I’m also tired of being the snappish-whiny-“hurry-up-kids-I-still-have-a-lot-to-do” Mama that I become when I’m busy.)

Reading this post over at The Better Mom about how to get started being un-busy helped put things into perspective again. Here’s my most favorite part:

Busyness is an endless loop.  If it’s a ticket to my self-worth, then it’s a treadmill that never stops.  Sooner or later, exhaustion and depletion set in.

Have you ever heard the acronym for B.U.S.Y.?  Being Under Satan’s Yoke.  I don’t think it’s too dramatic to say that I believe busyness has become a weapon of mass distraction.  We’re so overbooked that there’s little or no time left over for the things that matter most. Our schedules chip away at our time with God.  At our time with the people we love.

So, what did I do about it?

Psalm 127:1 pointed me towards my true north: Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain.

I resolved to stop building and laboring, both in vain as well as vainly.

I decided to become intentional, daily seeking God’s top priorities in my life.  I’ve realized that His priorities are not about accomplishments. They are about relationships.

It’s time for me to become more intentional about living out Matthew 6:31-33 (see my blog header above!).

It’s time for me to focus on my relationships and NOT my accomplishments.

At home. In our homeschool.

At work. In our Catholic community.

In everything I do. Yes, even on this blog and my other one about homeschooling.

Most of all, it’s time to focus again on my Beloved.

If not for Him, where would I be now? As a wife? As a mother? As a writer? As a person?

Where would my family be now?

(And, may I just say, on a “shallow” point of view, where would this blog be now, too?)

I need to remind myself about this more often: I need to “kick the habit” of being busy and just be.

Source.

After all, everything is grace. God’s amazing grace! And I need to breathe it in. I need to be consistently, unwaveringly, passionately be amazed by His love and grace.

Now, back to making myself un-busy. 🙂

How about you, dear friends? Are you guilty (as I am!) of being B.U.S.Y.? If you are, fear not. Just breathe and let Him embrace you. Just be. That is more than enough! 🙂

50 Days of Amazing Grace: Days 49 and 50 – We Are All Called To Be Holy / Give Your All {A Post-Pentecost Reflection}

May 28, 2012 by Tina

Warning! Rather lengthy post ahead! 🙂 Making up for the weekend’s lack of posts, hehe! 🙂 Please do read it till the end though! 🙂 Thanks! 🙂 God bless yah!

I failed to post here last weekend for the 50 Days of Amazing Grace series because the kids and I were at Kindermusik the whole day Saturday and I fell asleep (again!) with the kids when their Papa and I put them to bed later in the evening.

Congrats to our little flower, Therese (who didn’t feel like smiling for the camera here, LOL!), for completing her first Kindermusik program! 🙂 (Also in the photo are Teacher Suzette, Tim and Gaea, the kids’ houseguest last Thursday to Saturday!) Thank You, Lord, for , who made her attending the Summer program possible! 🙂

Sunday was spent with my in-laws’ and attending Mass and when we got home I couldn’t get my prepaid Internet connection to work! It was a blessing in disguise because I got to spend more time with hubby and the kids and didn’t spend ANY time at all in front of the computer (save for my attempts at going online!). 🙂

Anyway, as you all probably know, yesterday was Pentecost Sunday and we celebrated the birthday of the Church. Here’s a bit of info about it, from About.com Catholicism:

Christ had promised His Apostles that He would sent His Holy Spirit, and, on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of the Spirit. The Apostles began to preach the Gospel in all of the languages that the Jews who were gathered there spoke, and about 3,000 people were converted and baptizedthat day.

That is why Pentecost is often called “the birthday of the Church.” On this day, with the descent of the Holy Spirit, Christ’s mission is completed, and the New Covenant is inaugurated. It’s interesting to note that St. Peter, the first pope, was already the leader and spokesman for the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday (see Acts 2:14ff).

Source.
I love what the priest said in his homily yesterday, that although Jesus sent out His Apostles to continue His mission, we are all included in that sending out. No matter what background we have, as long as we have been baptized and confirmed, we are Christ’s missionaries.

But what is being a missionary all about?

Long-time readers of this blog know that not too long ago, my family and I were based in Timor Leste (or East Timor) as lay missionaries for Couples for Christ, a Catholic Charismatic community. Before I became pregnant, I was always on the go with hubby and the rest of the missionaries we were with. When I got pregnant though, and especially after giving birth, I began doubting whether I was still “missionary material.” I even became depressed, and felt that I was “useless” to the mission.
It took a long, heartfelt confession to one of our dear priest-friends to make me realize that once I became a mother, my mission in life had changed. FOREVER. Motherhood is now my mission. (And being a wife, too!) And that realization is partly what helped me recently in defining my mommy mission statement. 🙂
And this, dear friends, is what being a missionary, i.e. living out our mission is all about: remembering that we are ALL called to be holy, and giving our all in what we do.
Source.
A fellow member of the Catholic Bloggers Network, Elisa Armstrong, shares about how we are all called to be holy in one of her posts, and I love what she says there:

Everyone is seeking happiness and peace. To be happy, you have to be the best version of yourself – you have to be holy. We need to be all God created us to be.

(You can read Elisa’s entire inspiring post here.)
In relation to being all God created us to be, we must give our all in everything we do. Bo Sanchez wrote about giving your all in his book, “5 Things You Need to Do Before You Die,” (which I was able to read over the weekend — I LOVE my job, LOL!), and I’d like to share part of what he wrote with you.
You can purchase Bo’s book here, by the way. 🙂
In the last chapter of his book, Bo writes about the boy with five loaves and two fishes, who offered his baon to help feed the 5,000. In turn, Jesus multiplied his bread and fed everyone. A miracle had taken place!
Source.
Bo further writes:

You’re like that little boy.

You only have a little piece of bread in your pouch.

It’s for you. Only.

But you’re tired of small living.

You want to live for something bigger than yourself.

So you offer your little bread to God.

And the miracle happens: Your wealth will never be enough for you. (Because human desire is insatiable.) But if you offer your wealth to God, it will be enough for the world.

God will multiply the little that you have.

Friend, your destiny awaits.

Say yes to God.

Sacrifice your life for God!

Forget yourself.

Go all out.

Live for something bigger than yourself.

My dear readers and friends, YOU have a special purpose in life. You just need to discover it. I hope and pray that this blog, and our 50 Days of Amazing Grace series, has helped you — even in the teeniest, tiniest way — to do so! 🙂

P.S.
I’d LOVE to hear from you and what you thought about the 50 Days of Amazing Grace series.

Would you like it to be a continuing feature on the blog?

Did it help you in any way?

Which post (you can read all of them by clicking here) did you like the most?

Do YOU have YOUR OWN experience of God’s amazing grace that you’d like to share on the blog? If so, do let me know! 🙂

Please feel free to post your comments below! Have an awesome, Spirit-filled week, everyone!

50 Days of Amazing Grace: Day 44 – Do What You Love

May 21, 2012 by Tina

It’s time for our daily dose of Amazing Grace! 🙂 This time, it’s a super-inspiring post from Simple Mom, called “Do What You Love.” Here’s the part I loved the most about the post: (Hey, that rhymes! LOL!)

I don’t apologize for being a writer, because that’s how God made me, and there’s no reason to justify His creativity. I’ll bet He made you for something, too, and you don’t need to feel sheepish about it.

Perhaps you’re good at sewing, and you light up inside at the hum and whir of your sewing machine. Maybe you’re a runner, and you feel God’s pleasure when you do it. You might be the absolute perfect parent for the children you’ve been given, and there’s something they need that only you can provide in your unique way.

Whatever it is, don’t wish it away. Be happy with how you’re made. And then exercise that gift. Share it with the rest of us.

It’s just like what Bo Sanchez always preaches and writes about: the importance of discovering your core gifts and reaching for your life dreams — because that’s what God made us to do! 🙂 I.so.love.it! (I love the fact that, like the author of that post, I have discovered that God made me to be a writer. 🙂

He made you to be something, too, dear reader! 🙂 Don’t be afraid to discover it! Then you’ll see even MORE of how His grace works in your life! Believe me, I know!

Praying for you! 🙂

Leaving you with this quote for today:

50 Days of Amazing Grace: Day 40 – When God calls you, He’ll make sure you get the message

May 17, 2012 by Tina

A few days ago, I shared on my homeschool blog about how God turned our family’s plans upside down and inside out — just to show that He has a specific call for us at this particular point in our lives. I’d like to share that post with you here, in case you missed it on my Teachermama Tina blog.

When God Calls You To Homeschool, He’ll Make Sure You Get The Message

Right after posting it, a few moms sent me messages (via text and FB) that the post really struck them, and spoke to them about their own families’ situations. I love what one of the moms said:

just a shout out to let you know how your post touched me today  especially about your surrendering to God…”That night, though, I made peace with God. And I said, “Lord, I/we leave it all up to You.” Two days after, God showed us that He is, and always has been, in control of our lives, desires and dreams.”

Not just about homeschooling, but in all aspects of our lives, it’s so true!

Come to think of it, it is true. When God calls us to do something, He’ll definitely make a way for us to get the message. We might be delayed in understanding it, or perhaps we don’t want to hear it. But His message will, more likely than not, be LOUD and CLEAR. He’ll use even the most mundane, ordinary things or situations, or even the people around us, to speak to us. We just need an open heart and mind. 🙂

Think long and hard. Is God calling YOU to do something lately? 🙂 Don’t worry about answering, He will surely equip you for whatever it is He’s calling you to do! 🙂
