READ, WATCH and REFLECT: Embracing Our Identity in Christ

May 25, 2015 by Tina

Many people who look at me and my life now may think, “Wow, she has it all together!” or “Gosh, how confident she is!” or other similar thoughts.

The truth is, though, that I don’t always “have it all together,” and I’m not 100% “confident” all the time. From the time I was in grade school (or primary school, as it’s called in Brunei) all the way to college and even as a young mission worker, I struggled with my identity.

You see, I didn’t really know who I was and who I wanted to be. I seemed to always want to fit in and gain the approval of my peers — and I’m ashamed to admit that there were many, many occasions when I would do and say things that I knew were wrong and sinful, just to “fit in.”

It took me a looooong while to discover and embrace my true identity — my identity in Christ. “I am a Christian, a child of the living God,” as it says in the previously linked article. Thus, I am called to live out my life as God’s child, especially as a Catholic.

I must admit, though, that even now, as a married woman and mom to three kids, and a self-declared “media missionary,” I sometimes struggle with embracing my identity. I can be insecure at times, and a lot of days, I am not a very Spirit-filled person.

This is why I need to constantly seek God and His grace. I need to ask for His forgiveness every day, to “return to Him,” to “find a way back” to His loving embrace — just as I wrote in my Didache reflection for today. Without Him, I would not have the boldness to do what I do now.

As Pope Francis said in one of his Masses at Vatican City:

“We are saved in Jesus Christ and no one can take from us this identity card… Civil status: we are free!”

“This is how I identify myself, as a child of God; what a beautiful identity!”

“That is the root of our courage, I am free, I am a child, the Father loves me, and I love the Father!”

I invite you, then, to embrace your identity in Christ. Let us remember that God created us to do great things in this world — “great” by His standards may not be “big” and “grand” things according to the world, but remember that even the little things we do with great love count!

Yipeee! Our Homeschooling Interview Goes LIVE Later! :) PLUS My "Wifely Steps" are finally up! :)

August 20, 2012 by Tina

Happy Monday, everyone! 🙂

I’m sure all of you are enjoying the long weekend so far. 🙂 (If not, cheer up, friends! There is SO MUCH to be thankful for and rejoice over!)

As for me, although this long weekend isn’t much different from other weekends/weekdays (since I work from home Monday to Wednesday and we homeschool), well, I am still psyched because:

1. Our homeschool interview for ABS-CBN’s News Channel (ANC) is airing later — the first of a series of interviews featuring different homeschool families. 🙂 Praise the LORD! 🙂 Hope you guys can catch it on ANC, 5pm Top Story. (We don’t have cable so we’ll just wait for the reporter to send us the link to the video after the airing, hahaha!) Let me know if I do look like a raccoon during the interview, OK? Hehe!
Photo from
By the way, as of now, the other schedules of the homeschooling stories on ANC are as follows:
  • The Benefits of Homeschooling Preschool: Featuring Mariel Uyquiengco and family + Maricel Cua and family — August 22, Wednesday, 12noon Dateline Philippines
  • Homeschooling High School: Featuring Michelle Padrelanan and family + and her son 🙂 — August 24, Friday, 5pm, Top Story

FYI, the features are very short, though in fairness, the shoot/interviews took SUPERRR looong! Haha! Nevertheless, we pray that God will be glorified through each segment, and that more and more parents will be open to the concept of homeschooling! 🙂
So anyway, another reason to be happy today (at least for me! Haha!) is:

2. My guest post over at Wifely Steps is finally up! 🙂 Yipeeee! 🙂
Photo from .
Thanks sooo much to Toni for posting it! 🙂 Please do go over and read it if you guys can — I shared a bit about how my husband and I got together after a “whirlwind” romance; the lessons I learned about marriage and motherhood from being on mission; and how H.O.T. my hubby is (and how H.O.T. I’d like to be, too)! 😉

Click here to read the post. 😉 And check out Toni’s award-winning blog while you’re at it! She’s also on  and if you want to connect with her. 🙂

(By the way, in case you missed it, Toni did an inspiring guest post over here a while ago, on The Gift of Simple Living. Do check it out if you haven’t yet! 🙂

Enjoy the rest of the long weekend, folks! 🙂

We’re going to be on ANC! (And I will look like a raccoon, LOL!)

July 23, 2012 by Tina

Later today, a few of my fellow homeschooling moms, our kids and I will be interviewed by a reporter from ABS-CBN’s News Channel (ANC) about, well, what else, homeschooling! Please do say a prayer for us, that we will bring glory to God through what we say and do (and that our kids will cooperate, LOL)! 😀 Please also pray that Tim will feel better, as he was a bit feverish yesterday.

Also, on a rather shallow note, please pray that I will not look like a raccoon so much because I am still awake when I should be sleeping! Ha, ha! (Come to think of it, I hardly slept the night before hubby and I were interviewed on Family Matters either, but, well, I just realized ANC is viewed all over the world! GAAAAHHHHH!) Ha, ha! 😉

Actually, it doesn’t matter so much to me how I look. (Seriously!) 😉 I just really want to spread the message about homeschooling, and, indirectly, share about God’s amazing grace as well! 🙂 I’m still nervous about it though… ha, ha! Like, I said, please pray for us! Thanks, you guys! 😀

P.S. To everyone who has shown your support and prayers, especially on , THANK YOU! You guys are AWESOME, and I am so blessed because of you all! 🙂 Will keep you posted regarding the link to the news clip! 🙂 Special thanks to Mommy Levy of Living Life to the Fullest, now a homeschooling mom herself, for referring us to ABS-CBN! 🙂

Truly Rich Reflections: Insights from our first TV interview about HOMESCHOOLING :)

November 22, 2011 by Tina

If you’re friends with me on , or follow me , you may already know that hubby and I were blessed and privileged to share about our life as a married couple and homeschool parents during a recent interview for the Family Rosary Crusade-produced TV show, “.”

The Family Rosary Crusade’s official website can be accessed here.

Get regular updates about the show .
We were really nervous about it, as we are admittedly not “experts” on homeschooling, so thanks to all of you who helped us with your prayers, words of encouragement and support!
This is what I realized after the interview:
  • A LOT of people still don’t know about homeschooling, especially here in the Philippines. Most people think of homeschooling as “bringing school into the home.” Actually, homeschooling is a lifestyle. For us Catholics, the ultimate example of a Catholic homeschooling family is the Holy Family at Nazareth.
    Image from en.wikipedia.org
  • There needs to be a “re-vamping” of the image of the family in society, even among many Catholics and Christians, especially on the roles of husband and wife; parents and children.
    Image from travelblat.com
  • (This left me a bit shocked, and very sad!) A LOT of parents, whether unwittingly or on purpose, consider spending time with their kids ALL THE TIME, every day, 24/7 as a BAD thing or a source of additional “stress.” Sadly too, some parents consider teaching their kids at home to be too “stressful” or “burdensome,” even if they’ve never tried it! I urge my fellow parents out there to remember this:
    From prolifekids.blogspot.com
  • There is a need for greater awareness about homeschooling and its benefits to the family, society and the Catholic Church, both within Catholic communities, families and parishes, and outside these circles as well.
    Image from christianhomeschooler.info
  • God can use even your simple experiences and lessons learned to touch other people’s lives – some of the people who were there during our interview said that they just might consider homeschooling their kids, or at least exploring the option of doing so. PRAISE GOD! 🙂
    Image from salehoo.com
  • We have a loooooong way to go in our homeschooling journey, but by God’s grace, with lots of prayer, planning, discipline and determination (God knows how much I need these, esp. the latter three! haha!) we can do it! We will homeschool our kids for as long as we believe that God is calling us to.
HOMESCHOOL UNTIL HIGH SCHOOL? It’s POSSIBLE, and many families are doing it! As for us, hmmm.. let’s see! It’s all up to the Lord! 😉
    Image from free-onlinehomeschoolingprograms.com
And last but not the least,
  • I am SO BLESSED to have a God-loving, God-fearing, supportive and involved husband, who truly believes in and shares my dreams and goals for our family, including about homeschooling!
    I love you Honey!

We feel so awed that God would use our “inexperiences” to let other people know more about homeschooling, and about God’s plan for the family as well. 😉 We just hope that people would open up their hearts, minds and homes more and more to what God really, really, really wants for their lives. 😉

*If you want to catch our interview on its first airing, feel free to join us really, really early in the morning – 4.30 am!!! – on the second Saturday of Advent (December 3) on TV5. There will be another airing 2 weeks later on Studio 23 (I forgot the schedule, will edit this post once I find out!).
