Truly Rich Recommendations {Events}: Havaianas Design a Smile (Year 2) + The Mommy Mundo Bazaar

November 21, 2012 by Tina

I’ve written before about why I love Mommy Mundo. I love that Janice, the mom behind it, is so in touch with the needs of others, especially other moms. (I’m also privileged to count Janice as a friend!)

I love that Janice and her team at Mommy Mundo strive hard to “pay it forward,” i.e. to share blessings with others, even through the events they organize.

One such event is the upcoming Mommy Mundo Bazaar this weekend, Nov. 24 and 25, at the Rockwell Tent. (I won’t be able to attend this year because my officemates and I will be serving at the Kerygma Conference, along with everyone else who works at The Lighthouse {that’s what we call the building that houses all of Bo Sanchez’s ministries.})

Mommy Mundo will be launching exciting things at the Bazaar — including the 2013 Edition of the MOM 24/7 Planner (I SO LOVED the 2012 version, and wrote about it on Smart Parenting here if you want to know why), and SoMoms. Find out more by visiting the Mommy Mundo website.

The Bazaar will also include a special “event for a cause” — the Havaianas Design a Smile Contest. Here are some details from the press release:

Havaianas Pays it Forward with Design a Smile 2 for the Benefit of Operation Smile

When was the last time you made someone else smile? That is the question Havaianas asks you as it launches the Havaianas Design a Smile 2, a flip-flops design contest for the benefit of Operation Smile Philippines.

First launched in 2010, Havaianas Design a Smile gives children the chance to show their artistic talents by designing the next Havaianas Smile pair – a special design which will be produced into an actual Havaianas pair, with a percentage of the sales to be donated to Operation Smile Philippines, a non-profit organization which provides life-changing surgeries to children with cleft lips and cleft palates. The initial run generated more than 2,000 entries and raised more than PHP 100,000 from donations alone during this period.

“Havaianas believes that summer is a state of mind and can be lived every day of the year whenever you adopt a happy and carefree attitude,“ shares Anne Gonzalez, Managing Director of Havaianas Philippines. “And nowhere else is that more evident than in children. With Havaianas Design a Smile, we hope to generate funds and awareness to support Operation Smile in our shared mission to spread smiles all over the world.”

This November to January, Havaianas Design a Smile 2 is back, with the theme “Paying it Forward: Kids Helping Kids.” Beginning November 24th, artistically inclined kids can join Havaianas Design a Smile by submitting their designs illustrating their answer to the question “What will you do to make other people smile?” at partner events nationwide, beginning with the Bonifacio Global City Passion Fest at Bonifacio High Street from November 24 to 26, and at the Mommy Mundo Bazaar at the Rockwell Tent from November 24 to 25. Winners will receive exciting prizes from Havaianas, bobble, Pininho, Hobbes and Landes, McDonald’s, and Sony. The grand prize winner will also have his or her design produced as part of the Havaianas 2014 Collection as the Havaianas Smile pair, with a percentage of the sales from which will help fund the operations of Operation Smile.

“The response from our initial run was overwhelming,” says Ammiel de Leon, Group Director, “this year, we hope to enrich our partnership with Operation Smile even more and involve more people all over the Philippines in Havaianas and Operation Smile’s advocacy to give children their smiles.”

Havaianas Design a Smile 2 kicks off at the Bonifacio Global City Passion Fest at Bonifacio High Street, Fort Bonifacio Global City, Taguig from November 23 to 25, and at the Mommy Mundo Bazaar at the Rockwell Tent, Rockwell PowerPlant Mall, Makati City from November 24 to 25. Like the Havaianas Philippines Official Facebook page at  to find out other events that the Havaianas Design a Smile 2 booth will be visiting.

Havaianas celebrates its 50th year of sharing summer happiness this 2012. Experience the

summer vibe that never goes out of style with the world’s favorite rubber flip-flops brand.

There are two events happening this week that you guys might be interested in attending. Especially if you’re a parent. 🙂

First up is the Baby Carnival Pre-Christmas Bazaar by Online Mommy Sellers organized by Mommy Sellers Events Management. This will be on Friday, November 9, 4 to 10 pm, at the in Makati City.

There will also be booths by service providers like photo studios for babies and event stylists. My friends from ,  and will be there — please do drop by their booths! 🙂

Kids who will be attending with their parents will also enjoy the activity booths, which include balloon darts, face painting, costume fitting and FREE cotton candy! (Maybe the parents will enjoy it too?! Ha, ha!) You can also buy snacks, meals and drinks from the different food concessionaires that will be there.

The Baby Carnival event is sponsored by , , Ton of Fun, and Make Believe Productions. 🙂

For more information, please go to http://bazaarphilippines.com. You can also “Like” their Facebook page for updates.

The next event I’m recommending this week is The Learning Basket’s seminar titled, “Preschool Homeschool —You Can Do It Too!” This will be on Saturday, November 10, 2-4 pm, at the Studio at Capitol Green Street, Capitol Hills, Quezon City.

Preschool homeschool moms Mariel Uyquiengco (of The Learning Basket), Kim Espartero, Cathy Salvador and yours truly will be speaking and sharing our experiences. 🙂 Slots are limited though, and priority will be given to Kindermusik parents. A fee of P100 will be charged for venue expenses and snacks. 🙂 If you’re interested, please email mariel (at) thelearningbasket (dot) com ASAP! 🙂

I won’t be able to attend the Baby Carnival as I have work on Friday (and Makati is too far for this commuting preggy mama, haha!) but I’ll be at the Homeschool Seminar on Saturday of course! 🙂 Hope to see some of you there! 🙂

I’m attending the Family Congress 2012 on Saturday, because I want to learn more about bullying and other things about building the Filipino family. I hope to be able to swing by at least one of these events with my sister, who’s in the country for a visit, along with her hubby and our family’s miracle baby! 🙂

Truly Rich Recommendations: The Robot Zoo (In Town for a Limited Time Only!)

August 2, 2012 by Tina

A few weeks ago, my family and I were invited to attend a special event for media and bloggers — the Grand Launch of The Robot Zoo in the Philippines. Since we were discussing Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (which you can try requesting for at ) for that week in our homeschool, I thought it would be a “good fit” for our “lessons,” since, well, you know, steam shovels are machines-of-sorts, and so are robots! Teehee! 🙂

In case you guys haven’t heard about the Robot Zoo, well, basically, it’s a traveling exhibit that “features larger-than-life animated animal robots that reveal mechanisms that simulate the body parts of their real-life counterparts.”  Right now, it’s here in the Philippines for a limited time only, and is housed at the Exhibit Hall at the 2nd level of the Science Discovery Center at SM Mall of Asia.

Here’s the press release about it: 🙂 (Photos above are from the press kit, too.)

We got to SM Mall of Asia a bit late but thankfully, the event was just about to start. After some opening remarks (and yummy snacks — doughnuts from !) we were toured around the Zoo.

The kids had A LOT of fun “experimenting” with the eight different animal exhibits at the Zoo and almost didn’t want to go out after the tour! 🙂

Build your own platypus 🙂
Squid race by “pumping” pistons
How bats detect objects
Swat the fly, Rysse!
Another way to swat the flies! 🙂
Look, I can make the chameleon’s eyes and tongue move!
Rysse spent some time coloring 🙂
Turtle racing track 🙂
Racing “turtles” 🙂

Both kids LOVED “hanging like a bat!”

Of course, the “teacher” in me attempted to share some “lessons” while we were going around (“Look, Tim, this is how a housefly is able to stick to the wall!” “Wow, Rysse, look, the chameleon can change its color because…,” etc, etc.), BUT the two kiddos were running back and forth excitedly in between exhibits, so I just chilled and had fun along with them, and hubby! (We brought along our “angel helper,” Ate Lyn, too, since she’d never been to the Mall of Asia before! We’ve only been a few times, too — like, maybe five?! LOL!)

So anyway, we had to convince Tim and Rysse to leave the Zoo since it was time for lunch (thanks to the event sponsors:  {we only got to eat the pizza though; they ran out of spaghetti, LOL!}; chips from  and drinks from The Big Chill)! After lunch, there were games for the kids present.

Guess who won the longest line game? Ha, ha!

We went for a few more rounds of the exhibits at the Zoo before leaving. On a distantly related note, I was SO BUMMED that I wasn’t able to bring our GCs from Pois, Belly and Kids with us that day — their SM MOA branch was JUST below the Robot Zoo venue! Waaaahhh! Pity, we weren’t able to “kill two birds with one stone” and get clothes for Rysse! Howell. I hope to visit their TriNoma branch soon! 😉

Don’t I look absolutely dorky next to celebrity mom Suzi Abrera? 🙂 LOL!
What a FUN “field trip!”

Anyway, if you’re looking for somewhere to go that’s fun and educational for the whole family, do try to check out the Robot Zoo, especially if you have kids! 🙂 As for us, well, it was the first of what I hope to be many field trips for our homeschool this year! 😉

For more information, you may go to the Science Discovery Centre website here or their Facebook page .
