When Tim was around 3 years old, we started discerning actively about enrolling him in a preschool or homeschooling him. At the time, one thing I knew for sure was that if we were to enroll him in a school, it would have to be a progressive one, with solid Christ-centered values.
I only knew of one Catholic progressive school then, and although we eventually decided to go the ‘road less travelled,’ i.e. homeschool our children — because we believed that God called us to do so — I know that, should the time come for us to stop homeschooling and send the kids to a conventional school, progressive schools would still be among my top choices.
The question is: Where can one find a good progressive school that places faith among its top priorities, and has relatively affordable tuition fees? (We all know that quality education — at least in conventional schools — is not cheap!)
Well, for families living in and around the Pasig area (or live elsewhere but don’t mind the travel time required), I recently discovered a progressive school that fits the above description and comes highly recommended by a friend of mine: Child’s SPACE.
About Child’s SPACE
Child’s SPACE actually stands for Child’s School for the Practice of Appropriate Childhood Education. It provides young children with a play-based, child-centered and integrated curriculum.
Here’s a screenshot of their mission and vision, taken from their (temporary) website:
I like that the different elements of their school logo has significant meanings — check them out below:
What makes Child’s SPACE stand out as a progressive school
Some of you may be wondering what sets Child’s SPACE apart from other progressive schools. Well, in my own search for progressive preschools a few years ago, one of the things that I wanted was a solid faith-based program — something that is hard to find among the many progressive schools here in Metro Manila. Usually, the progressive schools just have values-based programs, not necessarily Christian values.
At Child’s SPACE, there is a special ‘Jesus Discovery’ curriculum, especially developed for young minds. Everything is Christ-centered, and there is also an emphasis on service to others. In fact, the teachers and staff of the school also started a formation and feeding program with the Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parish and Parochial School, which they plan to continue this school year, plus outreach activities with the students, like during Christmas.
Check out what one of the Child’s SPACE parents said about their emphasis on Christian values:
“Just to share, during Christmas programs and Moving Up activities, the songs for dances and parts of the program are mostly worship songs — and not the popular songs that are not child-appropriate. I personally commend them for embracing this principle because my kids learn more about God through these activities.”
Another factor most parents consider when looking for a good progressive school is the cost — is it affordable? Do you get your money’s worth? We usually think that progressive schools are equivalent to ‘expensive,’ and many parents often ‘settle’ for other schools because they can’t afford the tuition of progressive schools.
Well, Child’s SPACE doesn’t fit into the typical progressive school tuition category. According to my friend, whose kids are enrolled there, the school is “very affordable” and “the tuition is 1/2 or 1/3 of a typical progressive school (and most of them have a secular approach to religion).”
Of course, when it comes to your child’s education, one of the things to consider is quality, and whether or not the teachers are equipped to teach your child. The teachers at Child’s SPACE are all well-trained — according to my friend, “a number of them have MAs or are taking one.”
Here’s a testimonial from parents who have their kids enrolled there:
“We have been with Child’s Space for three years and we always thank God for leading us to this school. With their well-trained teachers for progressive type of learning, our children always love going to school! With a small class size, we never worry about our children being bullied in school. With their reasonable tuition fee for a progressive school, it is indeed a very good alternative to home schooling.
Lastly, Child’s SPACE has a Christ-Centered mission and vision — the school is not only our partner in raising our children to become academically good and to become good citizens of the society, but a partner in raising our children as saints! Our primary mission as parents is to raise children of heaven and we are blessed to have a school like Child’s SPACE that helps us with our mission.
— RJ and Jo Serra, parents of Augustine (6), Fiel (5) and Benedict (3)”
