I haven’t been on social media as often as I usually am (don’t ask me how often that is, please! 😛 ) so when I did open my Facebook account earlier I was intrigued by not a few posts I saw about Jollibee’s latest video series with the hashtag #KwentongJollibeeValentineSeries. Most of the posts were about the first video in the series, which you can watch below:
I must tell you; I was almost convinced that the video had a “happy ending,” much like most of my Facebook friends who posted about it! Ha, ha! Nice one, Jollibee!
I ended up watching the second video in the series, too, which was published on Facebook around three hours ago (as of this writing). I liked it so much better, and you’ll probably see why below:
Now, I know this may seem like I am “endorsing” Jollibee — I am not. This is not a sponsored post, and while I do confess that our family loves Jollibee, we still try to limit eating fast food as much as possible.
But, but, but. I could not help reflect a bit on the #KwentongJollibee videos (sorry, I am kinda weird like that! 😉 ). So please indulge me by reading on and please do feel free to share your own reflections and/or insights in the comments section below.
Without further ado, here are a few lessons on love that I think we can glean from the Kwentong Jollibee Valentine Series videos (though there is still one more video that will only go live on February 11 on Jollibee’s and YouTube account):
1. If you love someone, be honest with them.
This is based on the first video. I’m sure many people can relate to being “friendzoned” or maybe falling in love with their best friends only to get brokenhearted because their friends end up with other people. Now I know many people might not agree with me but I believe that if you love someone — truly, truly love someone — you should try your best to be honest with them.
But what if your best friend is already happily in love with someone else, and you are willing to sacrifice your feelings for their happiness? Check out Lesson # 2 below. 😉
2. Love hurts, but you will survive.
Based on the first video, we can all see that sometimes, when we love someone, our feelings don’t get reciprocated. Sometimes, even when we go all out, we still get hurt. But you can and will survive, and get over that hurt. Especially if you have God by your side. (I know, easier said than done, but it’s really totally possible!)
If you’ve ever watched Love Actually, you’ll know what I mean. If you haven’t, here are snippets of one of my favorite characters, Mark. He is secretly in love with his best friend’s fiancee-turned-wife:
3. Love is patient.
Referring to the second #KwentongJollibee video, we can all probably agree that love, just as it says in 1 Corinthians 13, is patient. And, as we can see in the video (and probably attest to in real life), patience and perseverance often pay off in the end — especially when it comes to love.
And I’m not just talking about love between husband and wife, or boyfriend and girlfriend. I believe patience is also crucial in every love-centered relationship, like that of parent and child, sibling and sibling, friend and friend, etc. Not just patience but kindness too, and the other qualities Saint Paul mentioned in his first letter to the Corinthians.
4. Love means you should be willing to say ‘sorry.’
I love how the second #KwentongJollibeeValentineSeries video ended — with the guy apologizing for being late. In this day and age where many of us live busy, fast-paced lives, we sometimes forget to say ‘sorry’ for seemingly little or trivial things like showing up late, or forgetting an important date, or losing our tempers because we’re “stressed out.”
If you love someone, you must be willing to apologize for even “small” things. Because a lot of times, it’s the “small” things that add up and end up straining or, even worse, breaking relationships.
So if you have people in your life whom you love — and I’m sure most, if not all, of us do — I encourage you: Take what you will from these lessons, and cherish your loved ones to the best of your ability. Oh, and don’t forget to ask God to help you do so — He is the Ultimate Source of Love after all! 😉

Hi Ate Tina! I have thoughts! 😀 Haha. Yeah, the friendzone thing in the first video was the first thing that would strike the viewer, but I realized that maybe it can also be something else. Like, love in the friendship sense, the one where the guy knew that she would be happier with the other guy. Since Jollibee ended it with the unconditional love thing, maybe the real message is not that the guy’s hurting, but more of he’s really happy for his best friend but he’s accepted that that’s his role in her life. (I’d like to imagine he’s not really so torpe and the girl actually knows, but they both understand that it’s not just meant to be them. But that’s just me.)
Haha. Ayun, hugot aside, maybe commercial # 1 isn’t just meant to break hearts, but to also to show that love between two friends, philia. And that’s a love to be celebrated din! 🙂

Tinamats!!! 🙂 Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Yes, philia is truly a love to be celebrated too! Thanks for pointing that out. Hugs and blessings to you!
