Discover the Riches of Being a Filipino

August 7, 2016 by Tina

filipino

August is Buwan ng Wika in the Philippines, and is often a time for revisiting our Filipino heritage. It is a month of remembering our roots, and taking pride in being a Filipino. So I think it is no coincidence that God made this happen: Our family is included in Simple Homeschool‘s current series about “Growing Up Around the World“!

The series is related to my friend and Simple Homeschool’s editor Jamie’s new book, Give Your Child the World, which I wrote about here. I was thrilled and honored to receive Jamie’s email about being featured in the series!

As I was answering Jamie’s questions for the post, I found myself reflecting again on what it means to be a Filipino — at least to me, personally. I found myself thanking God once again for making me who I am; for making me Filipino. I found myself beaming with pride because I know, deep down in my heart, that God has a special purpose for us Filipinos — despite the hopelessness and despair that we as a people often feel.

So, dear friend, I invite you today to discover the “riches” of being a Filipino by heading over to Simple Homeschool, where I share a bit about Growing Up in the Philippines — just click here or on the image below!

How to Determine Your Child’s Learning Style: 4 Tips from Smart Parenting Magazine

June 19, 2015 by Tina

Whether or not you homeschool, I believe that finding out your child’s learning style will help you help your child to learn better. This will also help you be a better teacher and parent to your child (yes, even if you don’t homeschool, “you are your child’s first and best teacher,” as my friends from The Learning Basket like to say!).

So, to get you started, here’s an excerpt from an article that I wrote for Smart Parenting lately, dedicated to help you determine your child’s learning style:

4 Tips to Help You Determine Your Child’s Learning Style

Learning styles play an important role in how students learn and how teachers teach. Since children — especially those who are preschool-aged and below — are taught primarily by their parents, it is also important that we know as much as we can about our children’s learning styles.

According to the Oxford Reference website, learning styles refer to “particular ways in which individuals engage in learning.”

For Teacher Tina Zamora, a family life and child development specialist, and the founder of Nest School, a child’s learning style is defined as “how he processes information around him.” They vary depending on how the child connects the information to his own life.

Fidji Rivera-Sarmiento, a special educator and mom to Boom, 8, Maxx, 5, and Naya, 4, explains, “Learning styles also overlap with Gardner’s multiple intelligences. As a teacher, and a special educator at that, they provide me with the primary ‘vehicle’ which I can use to ‘transport’ concepts. I also use learning styles to create groups in my class.”

Teacher Fidji adds, “Determining one’s learning style also helps my older students determine how they will attack and ‘hack’ lessons for better retention.”

Homeschool Log for October 3, 2014: Of Being Sick and Keeping Your Promises to Your Kids

October 4, 2014 by Tina

I know I ended yesterday’s post by saying that I was going to prepare the kids’ things for our bird-watching activity with the  in honor of today, the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi, but sadly, we weren’t able to join them at the last minute. I started feeling unwell and Anthony didn’t want to leave me alone with Anne, so everyone ended up staying home.

Here's a photo of the bird-watching activity yesterday. Too bad we missed it! :(

Here’s a photo of the bird-watching activity yesterday, shared by one of the ROCKERS members. Too bad we missed it! 🙁

I did feel a teeny bit better later in the morning though, so I brought the kids to a much-anticipated playdate with their fellow homeschooling friends. You see, I’m all about keeping our promises to our children, and this playdate was something they had been looking forward to for the loooonggggeest time!

So off we went, and they really had lots of fun! It was a time to catch up a bit with my friends and fellow homeschooling moms too, so it was a win-win situation for us all!

It was my mom’s birthday yesterday, too, and we had planned to visit her after the kids’ playdate. Sadly, once we got home, I started feeling really sick again. So much so that I ended up sleeping most of the afternoon, which meant that the kids had to “fend for themselves,” in a way.

Rysse kept herself occupied with playing and watching some videos, while Tim built all sorts of things from his Legos. Praise God that Anne also slept for a while, so I didn’t have to “deal with” her. 😛

Praise God, too, that Anthony was able to come home earlier than he usually does — I had to send him a “PLEASE HELP!” sort of text message, when the kids were hungry and I couldn’t pull myself out of bed! Thank God again that He led us to this apartment, which is really near Anthony’s office. GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME! 🙂

So yes, there are days when things don’t go the way we want them to… but I still thank God that He makes all things work together for our good (Romans 8:28)! Even if yesterday didn’t go the way I had planned it to, He still showed me that He is in control of everything in our lives! 🙂

How about you? What do you do when things don’t go according to your plans?

The kids have a make-up session for their “Meeting the Art Masters” Art Camp with Teacher Dindi Manlapaz today, so we really didn’t get to do much in terms of “formal” learning. Tim was able to read a chapter of his book this morning though, and Rysse did some simple arts and crafts activities, and a bit of handwriting practice (on her own, without any prompting from me, ha, ha!).

Anyway, here they are with their classmates busy creating their own masterpieces, inspired by the Philippines’ very own A.R. Ocampo. 🙂 Last year, I never would have imagined that the kids would be able to attend art classes, but here they are now, almost done with this first workshop, and gearing up for their first on October 23! 🙂 It just goes to show that God really knows our heart’s desires for our kids, even the most “shallow” ones!
