Truly Rich Recommendations {Events}: You Are Your Child’s First and Best Teacher: A Parenting Seminar

March 11, 2013 by Tina

Y’all know that I’m an advocate of homeschooling, right? When people ask me how long we’ve been homeschooling, I like to answer, “Since birth.” This usually gets a surprised reaction, so then I explain that I believe all parents homeschool their kids even when they’re still itty-bitty babies. After all, who taught our kids to nurse, walk, talk and so on, right?

Which is why I believe that parents are their children’s first and best teachers, just like my dear friend and fellow homeschooling momma Mariel of The Learning Basket. I’m so happy, too, that Mariel and her partner Sanne have made spreading the word about this belief part of their advocacy at The Learning Basket, especially through seminars for parents.

This March 23, Mariel will be speaking at the Medela House about the exact same topic: You Are Your Child’s First and Best Teacher. I’m encouraging all of you to go listen to her — you’ll surely pick up some great tips! Below are the details:

You Are Your Child_s First and Best Teacher March 23

About the talk:

“You Are Your Child’s First and Best Teacher” is for parents of children ages 0 to 3. It’s perfect for first time parents who may not yet be confident in their parenting skills and who want to connect with other parents.  It aims to help parents support their children’s development by exploring the mindset of being the first and best teacher, discussing the basics of child development, and providing examples and ideas of appropriate activities for each developmental level. It would be a good venue to share experiences and connect with other parents.

Sponsors:

Wonderworld will be holding a special raffle for the participants.

Mama Chows will be providing free snacks.

Medela Moms is the venue sponsor.

About the speaker:

Mariel Uyquiengco, is a mother of two “littles”, a Kindermusik educator, children’s books lover, and an advocate of the idea that parents are their children’s first and best teacher.

“I started The Learning Basket in 2011 to document the magical moments I’ve been having at home with my kids as we homeschool preschool. Encouraged by the response and inquiries from readers, I opened an online bookshop in 2012 together with my longtime friend Sanne Unson. I started giving free parent-education seminars too, to further my cause.

The Learning Basket is more than a blog. Through the books and toys available at the  and by partnering with local establishments in parenting events, I bring my message of intentional and involved parenting.”

How to register:

Registration is P250 but will be waived if parents buy a minimum of P500 worth of books or toys from The Learning Basket’s booth during the event, to encourage participants  to add to their children’s library/educational materials. 🙂 (Note: From personal experience, shopping at is totally addictive, so please be warned! 😉 Teehee!)

To register, please fill in the form here. I’m not sure if I can make it, but I really want to go! Hope you guys can go too! 🙂

The Heart of Our Homeschooling: On The Learning Basket

February 25, 2013 by Tina

A little over two years ago, I wrote about how my husband and I were introduced to the concept of homeschooling — through an American speaker at a pro-life conference we were able to attend. It was organized by the Catholic community to which we belong, Couples for Christ.

The seeds that were planted during that time have grown considerably, and we don’t regret heeding the call to nurture those seeds — the seeds of faith, hope and love.

Read more about how God called us to nurture the seeds of faith, hope and love on The Learning Basket, where I am honored to be included in Mariel’s Heart of Homeschooling series this month. 🙂 And do take the time to read the other posts in the series if you can, especially if you are considering or praying about homeschooling your children. Just click here to do so. 🙂
